Will my son/daughter be able to take band or a
foreign language?
All freshmen will be able to take one elective. Your son/daughter
may chose band or a foreign language as that elective.
My son/daughter is a computer wiz. Why does he have to take a
basic "Word" course?
the Academy recognizes that the ability to use technology facilitates success
in our society. the Academy has placed a high premium on these skills.
In the final analysis, if a student can test-out of the computer/keyboarding
course, that student can choose another elective.
What will each team be doing differently? How do I know which
team I want my son/daughter on?
the teams are set up to accommodate the two basic differences in schedules,
band and chorus. In terms of the core subjects, team teachers teaching
the same subject will be working closely together to make sure the same
subject matter is covered on each team.
My son /daughter wants to graduate in three years by taking care of
some electives other than the ones offered in the Pirate Academy.
How ca he/she accomplish that?
Unfortunately, your son/daughter will not be able to use their freshmen
year electives to meet that goal. A number of other alternatives
are available for such a student, such as enrolling in summer school or
scheduling those electives during their next two years.
Why are we still working in teams after three years of teaming at the
Middle School?
The research reviewed from many sources clearly indicates that students
at this level still need a sense of belonging - still need to feel an attachment
to a "home base" before entering the mainstream of the high school.
The Academy will nurture those needs.
Won't freshman be isolated from the rest of the student
body?
To some extent that will be the case, but they will interact with upperclassmen
in some electives, school clubs, and school activities.
