SCIENCE DEPARTMENT

  Diane Spencer:

I graduated from Wright State University in 1998 (at the age of 35) with a degree in Education and a concentration in Physics. Prior to receiving my degree in Physics I taught Choral music at Carroll High School and at Chaminade-Julianne High School from 1996-1998. I then taught Life and Physical Sciences at St. Charles for the 1998-1999 school year to only return to music at The Lutheran School of the Miami Valley for the 1999-2000 school year. All this prior to joining the West Carrollton team in the fall of 2000.

I am very much into music and theater. I currently direct the Kettering Community Adult Chorus and have personally sung with The Miami Valley Symphony Choral and the Dayton Philharmonic Chorus. I have been seen in theater productions at Dayton Playhouse, Playhouse South, Theater Under The Stars and have sung Opera with the Sorg Opera Company. I also play piano and clarinet. All this I do in my free time when I am not busy with my four children. My oldest is starting his first year of college while my youngest is beginning first grade.

My future plans primarily center around obtaining my Masters degree in Biomedical Engineering. As well as making the Pirate Success Acadamy a success, not only for the teaching teams but for the students as well.

Social Studies Department

Gordy Gibson

Born : October 18,1954

My wife, Bonnie, and I have three children: Jon , Rob, and Rebekah. We have lived in West Carrollton for the last eleven years. Our children have grown up and gone through the West Carrollton Schools. We feel a real connection to West Carrollton. Jon is twenty years old and is married to Heather. He is a senior at Cedarville College and is majoring in Youth Ministry. He is currently a part time youth pastor at New Hope Community Church of the Nazarene in Centerville, Ohio. Rob is eighteen and is currently a sophomore at Olivet Nazarene University. Rob has plans to work in family counseling ministry when he graduates. He graduated from West Carrollton High School as valedictorian in 2001. Rebekah is fifteen and is currently a sophomore at West Carrollton High School. She plays tennis and basketball.

I graduated from North St. Paul High School (Minnesota) in 1973 I graduated number 7 out of a class of 472. I played on a State Tournament basketball team in my junior year. I participated in football, basketball, and baseball.  I attended Bethel College in St. Paul, Minnesota for four years. I graduated with High Honors and a Bachelor of Arts Degree. I played basketball there for four years (NAIA division I). I graduated in 1977. I received my Masters Degree in Educational Administration from the University of Dayton in 1991.

Experience in Teaching:  D.C. Everest High School;Wausau, Wisconsin
                                  Greenville City Schools; Greenville,   Ohio
West Carrollton City Schools (currently in 11th year)

Extracurricular : I consider myself to be a teacher first and a coach second. Coaching for me is a way to participate and become a real part of the school environment, and most importantly the lives of young people. I have a real passion for working with young people and I enjoy teaching. Coaching for me is an extension of the classroom. I make it a point to emphasize the most important part, which is the education of young people. I have coached football and basketball every year that I have been in teaching since 1977.I enjoy it very much. My current position is Head Girls Basketball Coach at WCHS.

Future Plans: I plan on staying in the classroom as a teacher, which is my first love. I have taught in the Sophomore Block, Junior Block, and now I have a chance to teach in the Freshman Academy. I enjoy teaching on a team because I believe whole heartedly that if the teacher is working hard, and is excited about what they are teaching, students will have a more valuable learning experience. I do have plans on completing my doctorate when my children have all gone on to college.  I cannot justify throwing myself into a degree while my children are still home. I feel I have only one time around with them, and I do not want to miss it.

Hobbies:  I enjoy fishing, water-skiing, and just hanging around the lake. Since I grew up in Minnesota, I feel an attachment to water.
